Woodleigh's Presentations

I have two passions: one is creating picture books for children; the other is spending time in schools with teachers, librarians and children. Let me explain the latter. As a presentchild I struggled painfully with school. Although I was a bright child, I had difficulty learning in a purely linear or conceptual way. Since that was the method by which information was usually presented, learning was drudgery, resulting in a dread of schooling and very low self-esteem.

It was in college that I came to understand the concept of different learning styles. I realized that we learn in different ways and that my style, characterized by image and metaphor has it's own validity and application.

That's the basis of my passion for school visits -- I want to bring that awareness to other children while they are still young. I emphsize the pleasure of reading, the delight in words and the pride of information learned.

giftIn all of my presentations I place a special emphasis on learning as being fun, encouraging all students to enthusiastically support both themselves and others in this process. The following are some of the highlights included in a school, library, or special event presentation:

I discuss why I illustrate children's books and how my own childhood and family experience led me to becoming a professional artist.

Through sketches. slides, and original artwork, I show how I go about illustrating a story including the preliminary research, sketches, the "dummy", and then by finallygift reading the book aloud with them.

The tools I use are: JOY, rhyme, rhythm, repetition, curiosity, imagination AND lots of interactions through their questions! Drawing examples of characters from a book of their own imagining, coupled with ideas and suggestions taken from the students makes for an exciting and engaging session. Booksigning/autograph sessions are also incorporated into my programs as requested.

"Woodleigh has a sense of wonder and delight that intrigues children...and leads them into fantastic realms of creativity. She has a particular interest in those students who may see themselves as less able. She also has a very unique ability to help them recognize and affirm their potential as writers and artists."
Michelle O'Laughlin, Teacher, Colorado

"I really enjoyed Woodleigh being here. I liked looking at her drawings of when she was a little girl....Because of her, I think I might be an author some day."
(fourth grade student)

"What fun we had meeting author/illustrator Woodleigh Hubbard. The children, families and teachers at our school were involved and captivated by her presentation. Woodleigh let us get to know her. She talked about experiences, her family, and the importance role imagination and creativity play in her life. Then, she really got to work! The best part was watching the children light up and get involved in building an imaginary creature! Woodleigh let loose, and drew inspiration from the kids. It was overall, dynamic and the meeting of the imaginations! Please come again, and stay longer next time!"
UCDS, Seattle, WA
